Steel Cottage Pane Windows and Doors

Steel is the reason old Cape windows look the way they do. The sections are slender, so the glazing bars read as fine dark lines rather than the heavy grid an aluminium imitation produces, and on a whitewashed gable that difference is the whole character of the elevation.

New work is fabricated to the opening, hot dip galvanised and then coated, which is what keeps a steel window sound in a wet Cape winter. Doors can be made as single leaves, French pairs or full height pivot and screen doors, and we can match the pane layout of an existing house so an extension does not announce itself.

Restoration is often the better job. An original steel window is usually straighter and better made than a replacement, and its problems are rust at the bottom rail, failed putty and seized hinges rather than anything terminal. We strip, cut out and splice the corroded sections, re glaze, re hang, and get the window closing properly again, which on a heritage property is also what the approvals expect.

Where a client wants the look with modern performance we can specify double glazed steel or thermally broken sections, and where a window is going into a wet or exposed coastal elevation we say plainly what the maintenance cycle will be. Steel is a beautiful window that asks to be looked after.
