Horticulture

Planting chosen for the site it is going into, and kept alive afterwards.

The offering

Landscaping builds the garden. Horticulture is the part that decides whether it looks better in three years than it did on handover: the right plant in the right soil, in the right aspect, on the right watering regime.

Planting fails for unglamorous reasons. The soil was never opened up, the aspect was not considered, the species wanted twice the water the site gets, or nobody pruned it in year two. We start with the ground rather than the plant list: soil structure, drainage, pH and what the wind and sun actually do to that specific corner across a year.

The Western Cape rewards water wise planting. Fynbos and other indigenous species, used well, give a garden that belongs to the Cape rather than to a catalogue, survives a dry summer and a restriction notice, and brings sunbirds back into the garden. Where a client wants a formal garden, or the house is a Cape Dutch homestead that asks for one, we mix hardy exotics into a structure that can still be kept alive on borehole or tank water.

We also plan for the first three years, not the first three weeks. That means realistic spacing, a mulch layer that keeps moisture in the soil, an irrigation design matched to the planting zones instead of one setting for the whole garden, and a maintenance calendar that says what needs cutting back and when.
